I've been thinking about this, what is the notion that dares not speak these days? It seems the more outrageous the notion, the more air time it receives, could reason and rationality be the intellectual barbarism of our time?

Re: Intellectual barbarian?
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 11:40 AMWell the point would be to say the notion (regardless of what it is) to the crowd that would be the least inclined to hear it. The air time which gets the outrageous claims actually is considered very regular to the people who are watching. People who watch Glenn Beck do not consider his ideas provocative. Provocative would be making his audience watch an hour of Michael Moore's pedantic speech.
It is an innate human behavior to avoid ideas that violate our own personal beliefs, be they religious, political, philosophical. The problem here is that this is precisely the cause of intolerance, when people become so insular in their worldview that anything that disturbs it will provoke a hostile reaction.
A person who will shout an unpopular idea at the mob is in effect doing the unruly masses a favor. A pity we're not compensated for it. -

Sat, October 24, 2009 - 5:35 PMI'll say it again , disagreement with the current political administration is not valid intellectual activity, but a is public mental health problem.
all citizens that view current decisions and legislation in a "negative" view should be "re - educated", and released back into the
Democratic voter breeding areas,
I love the plantation.
I love the government.
Government is the solution to everything.

Re: Intellectual barbarian?
Sun, October 25, 2009 - 9:12 AMActually most people are not. The overwhelming majority of people would, given the choice, never confront an opposing opinion. I'm not going to place a moral onus on these people, this is simply the path of least resistance, the same reason why most people don't exercise, read more than absolutely must, and rarely try anything new. However some of us understand the wisdom of shattering the calcified, that in confronting ideas opposed to our own we not only test the validity of their claims but our own as well. -

Re: Intellectual barbarian?
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 8:31 AMPlenty are worth opposing .
And why mess around with advocatring mere opinions when absolute truth is so much better to advocate !
So called "shades of grey" (which is a misnomer from jump street) are never a substitute for accuracy and Truth . -

Perhaps accidentally, Jason's put his (no doubt busy and well-traveled) finger on his great gift to mirth for the rest of us here.

Re: Intellectual barbarian?
Tue, October 27, 2009 - 1:22 AM" what is the notion that dares not speak these days?"
actions, and of course they speak for themselves, and if not well, grow silent with disuse.
"could reason and rationality be the intellectual barbarism of our time? "
it could be anything, even anti-intellectually civilian ...ism or izum
Exceptions That Prove a Rule
"this division - between those who find the unfathomable inevitable and beautiful,
and those who find it irrational and thus needing to be changed -
has been a usual split, or perhaps cycle, among everyone forever." ~ Norman Macrae
except for those that don't
will you have my actions silenced until the end of time?
your brain-teased judgments scalded clean with remorse.
of folly and countless escapades that sought only your delight.
turned to crime and missing chances at every turn.
to bring together all futility and simmer in cold dawns such as this.
with a rising sun, warmth tickles pink your infinite desires, of waking
from so long a sleep, it never tires of dying from each pitiful rebuke
that sends me once again into horrors caught with nightshades,
labeled, framed, shamed and forever straying, until now when I'd only
still whisper in your ear, I love you and you return the favor.
now i would appreciate, if you could explain, as clearly as your won't.
the exception that proves the rule and how its definition breaks cool,
upon your face so bleak, your heart in tatters, still smelling sweet,
your words of wisdom foretelling a likely retreat that will not borrow
or weep, yet harness a respite from due diligence to reap a whirlwind. -
